Beaches
Florida is home to a myriad of beaches that appeal to surfers, from the Florida Panhandle’s Pensacola Beach to South Florida’s Miami Beach, and so much in between. Below is a listing of significant surf-oriented beaches.
Florida Panhandle beach/surf areas
Featured Panhandle beach: Pensacola Beach
|
Pensacola Beach, on Santa Rosa Island, is characteristic of Florida Gulf-region beaches: pure white sand and crystal-clear waters. One can find a range of action on the eight miles of beach, from parts brimming with beachgoers, to almost unoccupied areas. Surfing spots in this area include The Bay, Picken’s Point, Picken’s Point Dunes, Slabs, Pensacola Pier Parking Lot, and 12th-17th Street. Pensacola Beach uses the red, yellow and green flag system to alert surfers of water conditions.

Featured Gulf Coast beach: North Jetty
North Jetty is considered to be a premier place for surfing in the southwest Gulf Coast area. North Jetty is located on Casey Key, in the Venice, Florida area, where a companion area of South Jetty attracts crowds as well. Nine hundred feet of North Jetty beachfront touches the Gulf of Mexico. A standout aspect of North Jetty surfing is that the jetty is one of the only places on the Gulf Coast to sustain a large wave. Sharing the surfing waters with a large number of others is commonplace in North Jetty Beach.

Two main named break areas are accessed through the Anastasia State Recreation Area: the infamous Blowhole, and the opposite break action at Middles. Other break areas in the St. Augustine area are the primarily beachbreak F.A.’s and the low-tide-only St. Augustine Pier, and the long ride wave off of A Street.

Featured Central Florida beach/surf area: Sebastian Inlet

Sebastian Inlet, part of the Sebastian Inlet State Recreational Area, is the most renowned area for Florida surfing. Since the 1960’s, many professional surfers have ridden the waves of the inlet. Sebastian Inlet is composed of three breaks in the north, aptly named First, Second, and Third Peak. First Peak enjoys remarkably consistent surf breaks. Since Sebastian Inlet is very popular, these north breaks can be especially susceptible to crowds. To the south side of the inlet, Monster Hole provides big surf and long rides.

Delray Beach, concerned for surfer safety, uses the green-yellow-red flag system to alert beachgoers to current surfing conditions. At the east end of Delray Beach is Atlantic Dunes Park, offering a choice in surf breaks.
